Volleyball teams open practices this week

BALDWIN  —  Practices got underway Wednesday for the Baldwin volleyball teams who have new coaches.

Bob Hilts, who had been JV skipper, moves up to the varsity spot, replacing Antoinette Yiberhu, who became a mother during the offseason.

Duane Roberts replaces Hilts as JV coach.

Top players for the Panthers include Makayla George, Miranda Roberts and Nicole Mooney.

The Panthers will be practicing several weeks before their first match, which will be home Sept. 17 with Muskegon Heights in varsity action only. Both the JV and varsity will play Sept. 18 at home to open the West Michigan D League season against Crossroads. Brethren comes to Baldwin Sept. 23.

Baldwin hits the road for the first time Sept. 30 at Onekama and then plays Oct. 1 at Muskegon Heights. The Panthers play for the third time in three nights with a home match Oct. 2 with Bear Lake. That will be followed with road matches Oct. 7 at Mason County Eastern, Oct. 9 at Walkerville and Oct. 14 at Manistee Catholic Central.

The final home match is Oct. 16 with Pentwater. The league tournament is Oct. 18 at Pentwater, followed by districts.

The junior high season begins Sept. 8 at home with Walkerville and Mason County Eastern. That will be followed by road matches Sept. 10 at Walkerville and Sept. 15 at Pentwater. Crossroads is at Baldwin Sept. 17. The Panthers then play at Pentwater Sept. 22 and at Crossroads Sept. 24.

Home matches are set for Sept. 29 with Walkerville and Pentwater and Oct. 1 with Mason County Eastern. Baldwin’s final home match is Oct. 8 with Crossroads. The eighth-grade tourney is set for Bear Lake Oct. 11 to end the season.
