Bobcats face tough test in regional

Tom Anderson has never had a team qualify for the state finals. And, the Brethren coach realizes his current group faces a significant challenge trying to change that.
The Bobcats will tee it up Friday in a Division 4 regional at Indiana River Golf Club. The top three teams qualify for the state finals, as well as the top three individuals outside of the qualifying teams.
“It’s going to be very difficult there,” Anderson said. “Even out of our own district, there’s some tough competition, so we’re going to have our hands full.”
Friday’s 12-team regional field will include No. 6 Glen Lake, No. 8 Lake Leelanau St. Mary, No. 9 Suttons Bay and No. 12 Traverse City St. Francis — with every team fighting for the top three spots.
“We’re going to have to play really well as a group,” Anderson said. “It will take our best effort, without a doubt.”
In last week’s district tournament at Mistwood, the Bobcats got the last regional-qualifying spot with a score of 369. It will almost certainly take a much lower team score for Brethren to move on.
The last time the Bobcats played in a regional at Indian River in 2008, the top three team scores were 318, 336 and 340, although most of that round was played in a downpour. Anderson said he’s guessing between 320 and 330 might be enough for teams to punch a ticket to the finals.
“I think Mistwood is just as difficult as (Indian River) and we had people shooing that at Mistwood,” he said. “I think teams are going to have to shoot 320 to qualify and move on.”
Individually in last week’s district, Brethren registered scores from Bryson Waller (87), Alex Ringel (92), Dillon VanderBie (93) and Dan Kasarskis (97). Those would all almost surely be too high to secure a spot as an individual.
“One of our individuals would have to go pretty low I would think,” Anderson said, “maybe even in the 70s, to qualify.”
The Bobcats are scheduled to head north this morning for a practice round before Friday’s regional with a shot at the state finals on the line.
“They’ll probably have to play as well as they’ve played all year,” Anderson said. “It’s going to be difficult, but we’re going to go up there and give it the best shot we can.”
