Most Thursday nights at St. Joseph’s Parish Center in Manistee bring Love INC’s weekly Family Life Center. It’s a time for families to come together to share a meal and participate in classes that will help them build a brighter future.

On Nov. 17 Thanksgiving came a week early at the Family Life Center. Chef Brian Kissel and other volunteers, through the Manistee Community Kitchen, prepared a special traditional Thanksgiving meal.

“The Community Kitchen is excited to partner with Love INC and work with talented chefs like Brian Kissel to provide a healthy meals for our community,” said Community Kitchen founder Brandon Seng. “Together, our community has everything necessary to provide the education and resources that our families need in this holiday season and throughout the year.”

Kissel, the owner and head chef at the Blue Slipper Bistro in Onekama, often volunteers his time and talent through the Community Kitchen to teach cooking classes and prepare meals.

“While I’m usually busy at the Slipper, I try to make time to help out when I can,” said Kissel. “We have a great group of volunteers here, and when everyone pitches in, we can put out a great and healthy meal in a short amount of time.”

For the dinner fresh cabbage and cauliflower were donated by local farms and a cranberry relish and pumpkin pies were prepared by Love INC volunteers.

“The holidays are all about coming together and helping our neighbors,” said Seng. “This wonderful meal would have been a challenge for anyone to take on individually, but by bringing agencies and volunteers together we are able to give our families a Thanksgiving to remember. We have much to be thankful for.”

The Family Life Center meets most Thursday evenings to link families in need with resources, including long term mentoring, goal setting and training. The current session will conclude on Dec. 15 and the second term will begin Feb. 2.
