 New Grant Store

Construction of a new W.T. Grant Store is underway on U.S. 31 north of Merkey Road and is adjacent to the Big E Eberhardt’s Store. The contractor is Tri-Cities Construction of Spring Lake and completion is expected by the end of March. The new store will have 60,000 square feet of floor space.

60 YEARS AGO

Large crowd sees Santa

A crowd estimated at more than 2,000 persons lined River Street and flooded the post office area last night to get a glimpse of Santa Claus as he made his first visit of the season to Manistee. Santa arrived on time as he had promised, thrilling the hundreds of boys and girls who had spurned their early bedtime to be on hand for his first appearance. More than 1,000 bags of candy treats were handed out in the first 30 minutes.

80 YEARS AGO

 New telegraph printer installed

Extensive preparations had been completed and all was in readiness last night for the inauguration today of the new timed wire service separately and jointly by the Western Telegraph companies, Carl Holmgren, manager for Western Union here, stated. Both companies yesterday distributed to all patrons affected a joint “Telegraph Timed Wire Service Directory” which lists by states and cities all of the nearly 10,000 business offices in all parts of the country having the telegraph printers of Western Union or Postal or both.
