Meyers leads Chips at TC West individual tourney

TRAVERSE CITY — With nearly a half-month off and the cancellation of its next home meet, the Manistee wrestling team certainly welcomed an invite to Friday’s second annual Traverse City West Titans Wrestling Grand Traverse County Classic.

And in the individual tournament, the rested Chippewas seemed to be anything but rusty.

Manistee’s Alex Meyers, who now sits at 110 career wins for the team, took first place in the 125-pound division by going 3-0 on the day. Teammates Haydon Codden (145) and Travis Hubbard each took second with a 2-1 record in their respective weight class.

“We brought 21 kids and all of them got mat time,” Manistee coach Chris Codden said. “And we did real well. We did good against the kids we needed to as far as the ones we might see in districts and regionals.

“We had some good practices over the break, so the kids I knew were going to do well did well.”

Manistee’s Jon Bailey (112), Adam Ball (215) and Tucker Bruce (160) each took fourth with a 2-2 record in the event while David Engstrom (140) was fourth with a 1-2 record. The Chippewas’ Desiree Maidens-Sedelmaier (103) and Austin Minx (135) each went 1-2 on the day.

“Overall, we saw some different teams that we never see, so it gave us a good feel of what the schools have to offer up north,” Codden said of the 11 teams represented at the tournament. “At this point, it was just nice we could get some mat time in over the break. It worked out well for us as far as not sitting stagnant for that period.”

Manistee’s home meet against Frankfort on Wednesday, Jan. 4 has been canceled. The team will next see action at Forest Hills on Saturday, Jan. 7.
