Senior center news

By Carol Greve, Manistee County Senior Center

For the New Year holiday we will be closed on Friday, Dec. 30 through Monday, Jan. 2, reopening on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Happy holidays to you all from the senior center staff and Meals On Wheels staff!

SENIOR FOOD BANK NEW RULES FOR ATTENDING SENIOR’S

There will be no senior food bank in December. The next one will be Jan. 13, 2012.

There will be some new rules that F.E.M.A. Will be doing as of the first of the year in order to be eligible to partake in the food bank here at center and all food banks in the out-county area.

You will have to sign a self-declaration of Need & Liability Release before going through line.

1. You must be in need of Emergency Food and a Senior

2. Or a participant in a USDA Income-based program such as ours, or  the Food Assistance Program (formerly “Food Stamps”.)

3. And in a household where the income falls at or below the posted Federal Poverty Level which is:

Household size Ann. income Mnth. Wk.
(1) person $17,424 $1,452 $335
(2) person $23,536 $1,961 $453
(3) person $29,648 $2,471 $570
(4) person $35,760 $2,980 $688

Your sheet of liability will require you to sign for each Senior Food Bank you attend and will read as follows: the food I receive today from Manistee County Council On Aging will be used by me and/or my household and will not be sold or misused in any way. The food I receive today comes from a variety of sources. I accept the food “As Is” and release both the original donor and the pantry from any liabilities, damages, losses, claims, causes or actions and suits of law pertaining to the food I receive.

This is a federal policy and you must sign the sheet stating you understand the income limits and the liability release issue.

BAD WEATHER POLICY

Remember if the weather is bad and Manistee Public Schools are closed, so is the senior center and all meal sites and home delivered meals will also not go out. This only pertains to the Manistee Public School system, not any of the out county schools. If it falls on a day when there are cards, foot clinic, lawyer services, or any other program going on they will all be canceled.

SENIOR CENTER WATER AEROBICS CLASSES

You can come as often as you like once a week or twice a week, but the benefits of going to the classes is so great you will want to do it. These classes are for senior adults, male or female. Go check it out if you have never done this before and see the fun they have. These classes are held in the big pool at the shallow end. Kathy or Vicki would love to have you!
