20 YEARS AGO

Misfortune befalls Chip skiers

The Manistee High School boys ski team competed yesterday at Sugar Loaf Resort in the Michigan High School Athletic Association State Alpine Ski Championships. Third seed Paul Gardin came out of the start in the slalom event very strong and making some great turns when suddenly on the seventh gate he hooked a tip, lost a ski and was disqualified. Gardin won three medals at Regionals, the first time an MHS skier has done so in over 15 years. Overall the boys Chippewa teams placed 8th at State.

40 YEARS AGO

Safety Council meets

The Manistee County Safety Council had its second meeting with Manistee County Fire Departments and township supervisors regarding establishing uniform radio communications between all fire departments throughout the county. It was indicated that departments could purchase the basic equipment needed at a nominal cost and gradually build on it as their financial capabilities increase.

Oehlke honored

Eighty friends and associates attended a dinner at the Coral Gables last night for Ruth Oehlke who retired March 1 after having been employed for 43 years at was is now Packaging Corporation of America and the firms that preceded it. Oehlke began work at Filer Fibre when she was a senior in high school and continued there after graduation. She has worked there successively for Continental Can, American Pulp and Paper Co., American Boxboard Co. PCA and now Tenneco, transferring to sales department in 1948 and retiring as supervisors of the sales office.

 

60 YEARS AGO

No milk delivery on Sundays

Sunday milk deliveries will be discontinued by the three local dairies in the Manistee area effective this coming weekend; it was announced today by officials of the Ross, Ideal, and Siuda dairies. Starting this week the dairies are taking a step forward in modernizing milk service with definite day deliveries.

 

80 YEARS AGO

At the Lyric Theatre

Only a romantic genius like Frederic March could bring you the supreme thrills of “Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” now playing at the Lyric Theatre. This Friday there will also be an Adults’ Harmonica Contest at 9:00 p.m. and on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. there will be a square dance contest.
