BEULAH – Last Friday, a former Manistee city police officer, turned himself in on two counts of criminal sexual conduct.

Matthew Shane Thompson, 39, was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in Benzie County.

Thompson is the brother to Michael Duane Thompson, 44, who was sentenced in March to 10-15 years for criminal sexual conduct in the second degree.

According to authorities, the charges against Matthew Thompson derive from alleged sexual assaults of two female relatives between 1987 and 1994.

He worked for the Manistee City Police Department for 10 years until he resigned in 2006 after being convicted of domestic violence. He remains to live in Manistee, but was charged in Benzie County because the crimes allegedly took place when he lived in the Benzie.

State Trooper Rick Doehring, who handled the Michael Thompson case, also led this investigation.

“Things came to light during the previous investigation,” said Benzie Sheriff Rory Heckman, who also said that the alleged crimes took place at the same time with the same victims as his brother’s case.

Michael Thompson was arrested by State Police on June 20, 2011 on four counts of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree. That arrest followed a four month investigation that was started when one of the victims contacted the State Police. The incidents occurred in Benzie County and in the State of Florida during a time frame of approximately 20 years, starting in the late 1970s and continuing into the mid 1990s.

Matthew Thompson was released on bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday.

just doing some simple math here, the men are 39 and 44, the abuse occured late 70’s. in 1980 they would have been age 7 and 12. so even younger in late 70’s
