Murder trial that gained national headlines in 2006 returns to court

MANISTEE — A murder trial that made national headlines in 2006 returns to the Mansitee/Benzie County Circuit Court this week.

Mark Unger was found guilty in 2006 for the murder of his wife, Florence Unger, three years earlier.

Expert testimony provided during that trial is now being questioned by Unger’s defense team, which is asking that a new trial be ordered.

The hearing on Wednesday was held in court in Manistee because that court has the necessary teleconference capabilities that were needed. The hearing  is scheduled to last three days.

Judge James Batzer, who presided over the original trial, is again hearing this week’s testimony and arguments. The Michigan Attorney General’s office is prosecuting the case.

Prosecutors said Mrs. Unger was forced off a deck causing serious injuries at a Benzie County resort by her husband, and was then dragged into the water, where she drowned. Unger maintained his wife accidently fell from the elevated area.
