PREP GOLF: Sabers advance to D4 regional by three shots

MUSKEGON — It came down to the last scores coming in, and it was close, but Manistee Catholic Central kept its season alive by a margin of three shots.

The Sabers shot a team score of 390 to finish sixth and grab the last spot to advance out of a Division 4 district tournament at Muskegon County Club on Thursday.

“It was really pressure packed,” said MCC coach Pete Solwold, “but at least we made it.”

North Muskegon won the district with a team score of 342 while the Sabers were the only team with just four players.

Zack Bialik led the way with a 6-over 79 on the par-73 course that was good enough for third overall but a bit high for the All-Stater.

“He was just a little offbeat,” Solwold said. “We’ve got to give him a day off once in a while. He’s not perfect all the time.”

Gabe Toczynski shot a 96, followed by Jaime Sierra-Nielsen (105) and Jeremy Bigalke (110). Solwold said all the scores were higher than expected, expect Bigalke, who is in his first year playing.

“I was a little surprised because they had been practicing well,” Solwold said.
