To the Editor:

I’m writing in response to the interviews on July 26 of the candidates for Filer Township supervisor.

I find some words of Mr. Walker to be untrue. I attend most township meetings.

He states “wasteful spending.” The supervisor alone cannot spend dollars, it’s the township board as a whole, of which I feel this present board does a good job of spending our tax dollars. Example: They have come under budget every year.

They saved $45,000 a year by negotiating with the landfill for a once a month item pickup replacing the costly trash pickup. They work to receive grants to purchase fire department equipment. They did not allocate all of the 1/2 mill for the fire bond debt because of an increase in taxable revenue for two years. The more businesses and homes we have, the less we all pay in taxes.

“Lack of co-operation between boards from the top.” I assume he’s referring to the DDA board, which was established by the township board to recapture tax dollars to be used for infrastructure (sewer, roads, lighting, sidewalks etc.).

The DDA is made up of citizens and business owners (some not living in our township). My opinion is some of the board members do not want local competition. They are putting personal agenda ahead of what the majority of Filer citizens want. We need to expand business to keep shoppers in our area. Competition is the American way.

Referring to the sewer project stumbling blocks: The contract (available to all) agreement states that the payment would not exceed 50 percent. The contract is for 40 years and the TIF plan is being extended for 45 years. The $90,000 does not go to the city, it goes to pay down the bond debt, making it cost the end users less.

I also believe it’s time to change the vote for only one party during the primary, which deters a lot of voters..

We have a good working board. Please vote on facts on Aug. 7
