I want to thank everyone for their donations this past year which have allowed us to continue providing much needed services for the seniors of Manistee County. In addition to our regular services, we were able to pass along your blessings of the makings for a delicious Thanksgiving meal to 91 senior households and Christmas gifts to 44 AFC Home residents. The generosity of the people of Manistee County has truly been amazing and greatly appreciated. May Peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through.

Council on Aging Holiday Closings

The COA offices located at the Manistee Senior Center will be closed on the following days during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays: Monday, Dec. 24; Tuesday, Dec. 25; Monday, Dec. 31; and Tuesday, Jan. 1.

NAPH Meets

The National Association of Physically Handicapped Manistee Chapter will meet on Friday, Dec. 28, 1:30 p.m. at the Lake Bluff Bird Sanctuary on Lakeshore Rd. This is a new temporary meeting location for this month due to the continuing construction at the Senior Center. This local support group discusses topics of interest to the physically challenged population. For more information contact Richard at 723-1162.

Water Aerobics Class

We offer a water aerobics exercise class for senior citizens at the Paine Aquatic Center located at Manistee High school. The classes are Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8 a.m. The cost is $5 per session and you don’t need to sign up ahead of time. Just join us as you are able. The class is open to both men and women and you don’t have to be a “swimmer” to attend. It is a fun, low-impact way to work your muscles without putting a strain on your joints, while having a few laughs as well.

Free Attorney Consultations Available

An elder law attorney provides free, 15-minute consultations for seniors at the Manistee Senior Center once per month. He schedules appointments for the 2nd Tuesday of each month and can help with questions you may have regarding wills and estates as well as other legal issues. You can call the Senior Center (723-6477) to schedule an appointment for his next visit on Jan. 8.

Bad Weather Closings

As winter approaches, please keep in mind the Senior Center and Meals on Wheels Inclement Weather Policy. If Manistee Area Public Schools are closed due to bad weather, all Manistee County Council on Aging programs, including the Senior Center and all Meals on Wheels deliveries will be canceled as well. This policy is in place for the safety of our employees and delivery drivers as well as the safety of our patrons. Closing announcements will be made on local radio and television stations and the web sites of TV 9&10 and TV 7&4.

Temporary Telephone Contact Information for Meals Program

There are new temporary telephone numbers to call during the Senior Center remodeling project for people to make lunch reservations at the VFW or to cancel a Meals on Wheels delivery. The Senior Nutrition program will temporarily be housed at the VFW on 28th Street. You may reach head cook, Sue Magmer at 231-510-0183, or Meals on Wheels coordinator, Connie Ott at 231-233-6345.

Senior Center Offices Will Remain Open During Remodeling

The Manistee Senior Center kitchen and dining room will be closed Nov. 29 – Jan. 21 while the kitchen and sewer system are being remodeled and upgraded. However, the Council on Aging offices will remain open during the construction. The water will turned off during much of the construction and we will be unable to offer any restroom facilities at that time.
