Safe Harbor coordinator encourages volunteers

To the editor:

My name is Catrina Brown. I am the volunteer coordinator of Safe Harbor and I am asking for your help. For those of you that don’t know much about Safe Harbor, let me give you some information.

Safe Harbor is the homeless ministry in Manistee. We rotate on a weekly basis to different churches in town and also to the Manistee County Intermediate School District. During the coldest months of the year, we open our doors and our hearts to men, women, and families that have no place to call home. From 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. we keep these guests warm, give them a place to sleep, a hot dinner and simple breakfast. Our help runs deeper than these things though. We offer our guests friendship and a place where they can search out and have access to resources that help them move up from the Safe Harbor program and have a place of their own and gainful employment.

It takes a lot of people to keep this program going. We are in need of more volunteers to finish our season which ends on March 30. We are especially in need of men and women to spend the night at the different host sites. We know that it is difficult for the volunteers to spend the night away from their home, but try to think of these guests. They have no bed to go home to in the morning. I truly believe that our volunteers learn a lot and leave Safe Harbor after their shift is over with a new perspective on the homeless. These guests are not what you automatically think of when you hear the term homeless.

In the years that I have been serving this program I have witnessed guests go from their rock bottom and having nothing but their faith and willingness to change to having gainful employment and their own apartment and now are a positive contribution to our community.

Won’t you help these guests and witness this change yourself. I know you will feel the change when you serve this program. You can make a difference in the lives of these guests.

To volunteer, please call Love INC at (231) 723-6613 and leave a message for me with the receptionist or call First Congregational Church at (231) 723-5361 and leave a message there. I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Sincerely,

Catrina Brown
