We’re being deceived

“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms…disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assembled and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed one.” -Thomas Jefferson

The evidence against gun bans/buy-backs/confiscations as effective means of crime prevention is overwhelming. In Chicago, where guns have essentially been banned for self defense, the murder rate is frightening.

In 1976, Washington D.C. made it virtually impossible to legally obtain a firearm. The murder rate skyrocketed, earning the District the title of “Murder Capital” for three decades until the Supreme Court struck down its gun ban in 2008. Residents began purchasing thousands of firearms—murders in D.C. immediately dropped to a 45-year low.

In Australia, following heinous shootings, the government mandated a “buy back” program in 1997 that completely banned gun ownership for the general population. The result: armed robberies up percent, assaults involving guns up percent, gun murders up 19 percent, home invasions up 21 percent.

In Great Britain, following mass shootings in 1987 and 1996, most guns were banned. Since then the UK has the second highest overall crime rate in the European Union, the 5th highest robbery rate, the 4th highest burglary rate. The EU, in 2011, named the UK the most violent country in the EU.

Truth — Crime Increases with Gun Bans

By contrast, the U.S. in 2011, despite being #1 in the world in gun ownership, was 28th in gun homicides. In 2004, the Federal “Assault Weapon” Ban expired. Gun and ammunition purchases soared. The result? In 2009, total firearm related homicides declined 9 percent from the 2005 high.

In 1997, as part of “Guns in America,” a study authored by noted anti-gun criminologists Philip Cook and Jens Ludwig, the National Institute of Justice reported that guns were used 1,500,000 times annually for self defense in America. Unbiased researchers put the number around 2,500,000.

Truth — Guns Thwart Crime and Save Lives

The gun-ban politicians and their media allies are fully aware of these truths. But we virtually never hear them from either one. Rather, gun-ban politicians, CBS, NBC, ABC, and CNN incessantly hammer us with anti-gun messages.

If the media wanted to, on average, it could pick from over 4,000 to 6,800 examples daily of citizens protecting themselves, family and neighbors from being killed, raped, brutalized and robbed. If those defenders of life and well being were exalted for their courageous action against evildoers, perhaps the public’s outrage would be focused where it belongs—on those who do evil. Perhaps enthusiastic coverage of criminals getting shot would alter their behavior.

Instead, certain politicians, with their media, exploit human tragedy, and spin deceitful terminology (assault weapon, high capacity magazine, 40 percent gun show loophole) to manipulate public opinion against gun ownership by law-abiding citizens.

Why such aggressive promotion of a lie?
