Abraham Krause is the manager of America’s Fitness Center that recently opened on U.S. 31 South in Manistee in part of the Striketown bowling alley.

Krause said America’s Fitness Center has been open since Jan. 15, but it has taken a while to get up to speed because there were delays in the delivery of the gym’s equipment.

The delivery of equipment wasn’t a big deal for the gym, Krause said, because it has many programs to offer besides traditional weight training and the use of exercise machines.

“We have our cardio set-up, our fitness on demand program and a virtual trainer program 24 hours a day so you can come in and do a video class any time you want using a life-size screen,” Krause said.

An important part of the gym is ActivTrax, a customized workout program that considers customers’ equipment preferences, workout history and fitness preferences, such as how many days a week they want to work out.

“We have a kiosk customers can work from or they can download the application for their smart phones,” he said. “It has an online nutrition planner that works on customers’ home computers and counts calories and tells them where they should be.”

Krause points out that proper nutrition is a huge part of getting in shape.

“To get started we do a snapshot of the customer’s nutrition and give suggestions on how things can be fixed for better nutrition,” he said. “Fruits and vegetables are extremely important to your everyday nutrition profile. How good you can feel on a regular basis depends a lot on what you eat. I’d say 70 percent of what you do is based on your nutrition and 30 percent based on what you do in the gym. As long as you have your foundation set we like to start there and use your routine in the gym to make you into a better you.”

Krause noted that the business had three other locations — Whitehall, Hart (the main location) and Ludington and decided it would be natural to expand to Manistee.

When asked about success stories, he talked about a customer at the Ludington location.

“In the last nine months of 2012 he lost almost 90 pounds and has done it naturally,” Krause said. “He did it all on his own after I set a pattern in front of him. He worked hard. He’s got kids and two or three jobs, so he’s a hard-working guy and it took a lot of extra effort to get it done. He didn’t have any extra time, but he made it work and he’s still going at it to this day. It’s changed his life and revolutionized how his family looks at nutrition and he’s a good influence on his kids. They are eating better now, too, so it’s cool to see someone’s life change like that.

“He’s not the only one we’ve had that happen to, but he’s my all-star in the weigh loss category.”

Krause noted that customers get a key fob or a wallet card that gives them access to the facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

“We’re excited to be here and get things started. We also have a silver sneakers program that works through senior citizen supplemental healthcare, so some can get a free membership that way.”
