Contest winners

Manistee Catholic Central Elementary School winners of the bookmark drawing contest for grades 5 and 6 were: Bruce Patulski (first place), Ellyn Niesen (second place) and Lindsey Kowalski (third place). All of the children are in Sister Fran’s fifth grade class.

40 YEARS AGO

Bear Lake band to play in festival

The Bear Lake High School Band directed by David LaRowe will travel here tomorrow to participate in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Festival at Big Rapids Junior High School. From there hopefully the band will advance to the regional and state contest.

60 YEARS AGO

Building new cold storage plant

A new cold storage plant is now under construction at the Jebavy-Sorenson Orchard Co. and is being built to facilitate the handling of the company’s crop of apples, cherries, peaches and pears. The new building is 50 x150 x14 with a unit of like size to be built as soon as weather conditions permit. The combined capacity of the units will be approximately 80,000 bushel.

Local ski club views area

The Manistee Ski Club made a visit late yesterday afternoon to the proposed Manistee Winter Sports Area in the Udell Hills section of the Manistee National Forest. Accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Holland Capper, 11 members of the club made their first official inspection of the site, which will be developed starting this spring.
