 Cost figures for library merger

For some time there has been discussion on merging the Manistee County Library and the Manistee City Library and a committee composed of the two library boards and of librarians Merrie Brennan and James Geroux have been conducting a survey of benefits and drawbacks of such a move and of ways in which it could be accomplished. For remodeling to minimum standards he gave a cost estimate of $227,340; to remodel to new building standards the total estimate was $366,075.


County resort sign displayed

Beginning next week the large Manistee County resort sign will go on display in the picture window of the Michigan Tourist Council office at 230 North Michigan Ave. in Chicago, Eugene Emunson, Secretary of the Board of Commerce, said today. The sign shows pictures of fishermen wading county streams, with Manistee County printed across the front of it.

Change at Oakes Insurance Agency

An announcement was made today by John A. Oakes of the Oakes Insurance Agency that his brother, James E. Oakes, has purchased the business and will assume its management immediately. John will soon leave for Grand Rapids where has accepted another position.


Spirited election

More than 80 persons had voted up to noon in Eastlake’s most spirited village election in many years. President Bill Germayne is running on slips in the race.

Intramural games

The intramural basketball tournament gets under way this afternoon at the high school with 14 teams entered, under the direction of Rex Anderson. The tournament is expected to last three weeks.
