Lions sign YouTube kicking sensation Rugland

The Lions signed Internet sensation Havard Rugland to a contract Thursday to compete for the kicking job left vacant by Jason Hanson’s retirement last week.

Rugland, from Norway, is known for his YouTube video compilations in which he showcases an array of tricky yet accurate kicks. He worked out for the Lions last month at the same time they signed new punter Blake Clingan.

The Lions signed 38-year-old David Akers to a one-year deal last Friday, a day after Hanson retired after 21 NFL seasons.

Akers is coming off a down season in which he missed 13 of 42 field goals for the San Francisco 49ers and battled a hip injury, but he’s a six-time Pro Bowler.
