MANISTEE — For a time several years ago, McManigal’s Pub was a popular night spot in Manistee. In fact, a Northern Michigan publication selected it as the best bar/hangout for young people.

Now McManigal’s has a new owner — Raik Khutaba — who is committed to returning the establishment to its glory days.

Khutaba was born in Israel and has been in the United States for 20 years, operating restaurants for the past 14 of them. He owned a restaurant in Florida and most recently managed a Chili’s restaurant and IHOP (International House of Pancakes) in Colorado.

Two years ago he started looking for a business opportunity in Northern Michigan so he could be closer to his daughter, who lives in Traverse City.

“Raik sent me an email message because he saw our listing online,” said Therran Ferguson, sales associate at Coldwell Banker A.L.M. Realty & Associates of Manistee. “We worked with him for about a year and a half to close the deal. There were a lot of back-and-forth negotiations. The last issue was getting the liquor license transferred.”

Ferguson said he is pleased that financing could be arranged locally through Honor Bank and that Khutaba is hiring local contractors to work on improvements to the building.

Therran did a great job,” Khutaba said. “He made it happen. I went online and then got in touch with Therran and said, ‘Let’s make this happen.'”

Khutaba said he has had great support from many local people, especially chef Todd Cole, who has worked in the kitchen at McManigal’s during the winter months when he’s not working at the Manistee Golf & Country Club.

“Todd has been a good resource; a great, great help,” Khutaba said.

The business has been McManigal’s Tavern for the past 10 years, and for many years before that it was known as Red’s Tavern.

McManigal’s is open from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Those hours will change with the addition of lunch hours when the kitchen re-opens. It is currently undergoing extensive renovation.

“Right now we’re going to keep everything the same,” Khutaba said. “Maybe down the road there will be some changes, but not right away.”

That means that Thursday night continues as karaoke night and there is dance music on Friday and Saturday nights.
