Manistee Art Institute prepares for upcoming show

Jason Raymond, Patrick Farnsworth, Connor Nugent and John Nugent helped Jane Davidson get her 8 foot by 10 foot, 300 pound stainless steel sculpture into Hardy Hall for the 3 Artist + series, which starts Friday.

MANISTEE — Volunteers for the Manistee Art Institute were busy Wednesday setting up exhibits for the next installment of the “3 Artist +” series, which will open Friday in Hardy Hall at the Ramsdell Theatre.

Each week, the series features three to four local artists who work in different mediums.

This week, art from Jane Davidson, Eileen Postma, Mark Hoffman and Michael Grant will be displayed. Davidson will display sculptures, Postma will display watercolors, Hoffman will display watercolors and sculptures and Grant will show acrylic paintings.

“(The series) is a way for our local artists to demonstrate their work,” said Kerry Schubach, president of the MAI board of directors. “It’s almost like running a different gallery every week for three to four of our artists.”

The pieces will be displayed until Aug. 1; the show is free and open to the public. The series is held throughout the summer to give local artists exposure while vacationers are visiting Manistee.

On Wednesday, volunteers helped to get an 8-foot by 10-foot, 300-pound stainless steel sculpture made by Davidson in the front door of Hardy Hall.

“I chose this piece because the abstract shape (would contrast) with the old building,” Davidson said of the sculpture.

The artists will continue to populate Hardy Hall with art before the series opens Friday.
