Planet D Nonet to present ShoreLine ShowCase concert

MANISTEE — Planet D Nonet will be returning to Manistee at 7 p.m. on Tuesday for the seventh week of the Manistee ShoreLine ShowCase 2013 series. The concerts are held in the Rotary Gazebo at Douglas Park First Street Beach, and in the event of rain, the concert will be moved to the Lion’s Pavilion.

Planet D Nonet hails from the Detroit area and has been performing swing and big band jazz since 2007. Founded by RJ Spangler and James O’Donnell, the term “Nonet” refers to a nine-piece band, and the “D” refers to Detroit.

They use two trumpets, a trombone and three saxophones to perform the classic swing music of Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Count Basie, as well as more modern jazz by Sun Ra and Pharoah Saunders, always with a Detroit twist.

This week Manistee ShoreLine ShowCase is recognizing bronze level sponsors who have contributed $50 to $99 to help bring the concerts to Manistee. Bronze level sponsors this year are too many to list individually, but their donations play a significant part in bringing these talented performances to Manistee.

Anyone who would like to become a ShoreLine ShowCase sponsor can make a donation by sending a check payable to Manistee ShoreLine ShowCase to Manistee ShoreLine ShowCase, P.O. Box 62, Manistee, MI 49660.

This year the series produced special T-shirts that can be purchased at each concert to show support for the series.

The next concert, on Aug. 6, will feature Jeannie Lambert and Russ Phillips performing with the Steve Sandler Band.
