PREP ROUNDUP: Chippewas finish 2-0 at Frankfort

FRANKFORT — The Manistee wrestling team evened its Mid-Michigan Wrestling Conference record on Wednesday by winning both of its matches in Frankfort.

The Chippewas topped the hosting Panthers 52-27 and defeated Forest Area 45-31 to move to 2-2 against conference foes.

“We definitely came through with the guys that always do, and then our freshmen keep improving day by day, so I couldn’t be happier with the improvement all around,” said Manistee coach Chris Codden. “It was a day where I had to bump a lot of people around to fill weight classes, but to go 2-0 on the day in conference is definitely a good thing for us.”

Manistee’s Evan Erts (130 pounds), Corbin Miller (145/152), Logan Bond (152/160), Jake Williams (160/171) and Adam Ball (215) each went 2-0 on the day while Caroline Kessler (103), Tanner Vadeboncoeur (112), Jazmyn Booker (119), Audrey Padilla (125), Briana Larsen (125), Ben Chandler (189) and Dennis Switalski (heavyweight) all won a match apiece.

GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Big third leads Onekama past Northport

NORTHPORT — The Onekama girls basketball team poured in 28 third-quarter points en route to a 59-25 victory over Northport on Wednesday.

Emma Putney led the Portagers (3-3) with a double-double that consisted of 18 points and 10 rebounds, while teammate Kayla Kosiboski scored 14 to go with nine assists.

“Coming off a long winter break, we got off to a slow start,” said Onekama coach Jim Armstrong, whose team led 8-6 after the first quarter and 21-10 at the break. “But, the kids came out in the third and played really hard, really strong. That pretty much put it away.”

Onekama went 11-for-20 from the field in the frame, and made 14 of 17 free throws in the game.

“Like I said, we had a long break so it was good to get back in the gym and play somebody,” Armstrong said. “We worked our way through a slow first half, and played with good balance, which was nice to see.”

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

Balanced Portagers shut down Wildcats

NORTHPORT — The Onekama boys basketball team put the clamps on Northport on Wednesday and cruised to a 53-22 victory.

“Over Christmas break we were stressing taking care of the basketball, playing hard defense and rebounding,” said Portagers coach Nathan Bradford. “We wanted to keep it simple, and the guys did a good job going out, playing hard, and I thought everyone contributed in a good way.”

Onekama (3-2), which held the Wildcats to three points in the second quarter and just two in the third, spread its point total around as Jon Eno led the way with 11 to go with four rebounds.

John Schoedel scored nine for the Portagers while Jarett Sovereign had eight and Randy Pienta scored seven to go with six steals.

The Portagers return to West Michigan D League play on Tuesday at Pentwater.
