Spring Lake edges Manistee by four points in Coastal Swim Conference dual meet

MANISTEE — Last season, Manistee didn’t drop a single Coastal Swim Conference dual meet.

The Chippewas dropped their first of this season, losing 95-91 to Spring Lake on Thursday night at the Paine Aquatic Center.

Manistee won eight of the 12 events, but didn’t have the bodies to keep up with the deeper Lakers.

“We didn’t make any (state finals) cuts,” said Manistee coach Corey Van Fleet, “but we had to swim them back-to-back-to-back even to stay in this meet.”

A trio of Chippewas placed first in all four of their events.

Troy Trombley won the 200-yard freestyle and 500 freestyle, Zach Reau won the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly and John Kutschke took first in the 50 free and 100 free.

“We had some major breakthroughs,” Van Fleet said. “For them to swim the times equal to or better than they did in the conference championship (last season), that’s pretty good.”

The 200 freestyle relay team of Kutschke, Reau, Alex Carter and Trombley took first, as did the 400 freestyle relay squad of Reau, Kutschke, Trombley and Zac Carter.

Despite winning three of the relays, the Lakers had 11 more swimmers and scored enough secondary points to avenge a two-point dual meet loss to the Chippewas last season.

“Look at the freestyle relays. They can’t hang with us,” Van Fleet said. “By the end of the season, they’ll be better, but so will we.”
