Chips’ Reau, 400 relay make cut in state prelims

HOLLAND — Manistee will be represented by senior Zach Reau as well as its 400-yard freestyle relay team in today’s conclusion of the Division 3 state finals after their performance in Friday’s preliminaries at Holland Aquatics.

Reau placed 15th in the 500-yard freestyle in the time of 4:57.18 to qualify for today’s consolation heat for points, while the team of Reau, Zac Carter, Troy Trombley and John Kutschke placed 13th in the 400 in 3:23.86 to move on.

The top-16 finishes in each event Friday will be split evenly between championship and consolation heats today. The Chippewas’ pair of consolation qualifiers can place no higher than ninth today.

“We want them to just go out and have some fun,” Manistee coach Corey Van Fleet said of Reau and the 400 team.

“The meet was tight at the top,” he added of the prelims. “We didn’t have a bad swim down here, we’re just in some tall cotton.”

Manistee sent eight swimmers to compete in six events this weekend. Reau also swam in the 200-yard freestyle on Friday, but just missed the cut with a 17th-place time of 1:49.73. Kutschke also competed individually, placing 30th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.89.

The Chippewas’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Kutschke, Alex Carter, Trombley and Zac Carter placed 22nd in 1:33.19 and the 200-yard medley team of Weston Fredericks, Reau, Trombley and Kutschke placed 23rd in 1:45.99.

Both of Reau’s swims and the 200- and 400-yard relay times were program records for Manistee.

“We’re a new program and moving forward, and at the same time the curve is moving further out in front of us,” Van Fleet said. “We have to keep at it at a rapid pace.”
