MANISTEE — Manistee High School Quiz Bowl coach Amanda Clemons is going to have to get up extremely early Friday morning, and she is thrilled about the opportunity to do it.

Clemons will be pulling out of the Manistee High School parking lot at 5:30 a.m. that day to take her team to the state final competition on the campus of Michigan State University.

“Our first match is on 11:15 a.m. on Friday morning and we will be playing the winner of the Flint Powers and Shepherd because we got a first round bye for being undefeated,” she said.”

Clemons said they are thrilled at the prospect of being back in the state finals competition.

“It has been three years since we went to state,” she said. “We also participated in Quiz Central this year and have advanced to the championship round in our division. It has been a really good year, and we have a great group of kids.”

The varsity team has five seniors including Cameron Blevins, Nick Veine, John Kutschke, Sarah Chandler, Nick Veine and Stephen Schulte. Freshman Kyle Schoebroeck rounds out the varsity squad.”

“It’s nice to have it happen in your senior year where you get to go to state,” said Chandler.

Blevins said he felt it was a real honor.

“I am more excited about going to state with Quiz Bowl than something else because I think the competition level for Quiz Bowl is more fun at that level,” he said.

Clemons said the team had a very good year and a nice finish at the state tournament would add some icing to the cake.

“Quiz Bowl is always so much fun,” she said. “After we finished the regular season our conference still does a tournament, so the regular season champ and the tournament winner can both qualify for state,” she said. “We had already won the division so we really didn’t have to go to the tournament, but the kids wanted to compete.”

The Manistee High coach feels that the team can’t lose on Friday.

“No matter what happens, we have had a good year, and I am really proud of them,” she said.
