Local artist to compete in international contest

ARCADIA TWP. – Sally Manke, of Arcadia, is a semi-finalists for the 2014 American Quilters Society QuiltWeek, which will take place in Grand Rapids from Aug. 20 to 23 at the DeVos Place Convention Center.

Manke has been chosen to display the quilt, MANAROLA, ITALY, along with 336 other quilts in this the contest. First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded in seven categories, along with seven overall awards including best of show. Winners will be announced at the show and posted on the AQS website, QuiltWeek.com.

“A spring trip hiking to Manarola, Italy, provided the inspiration for this work,” Manke said. “It was incredible to find centuries old architecture carved out of the mountainside during the time of the barbarians still in use in Cinque Terre. Our apartment during the stay is depicted in this work. This piece combines raw edge fused applique, confetti quilting, fabric painting and thread painting techniques.”

More than $50,000 will be granted, including $10,000 for the Janome of America Best of Show and $3,500 each for best bed, best wall, best hand, best home, best longarm workmanship and best modern quilts.

Regardless of how Manke places in the final judging, all semifinalists´ quilts will be displayed at the show, which is expected to draw more than 15,000 people.

Quilts were entered in this international contest from 33 states and seven countries besides the U.S. There will be a wide range of special exhibit quilts on display from around the world.
