Planet D Nonet returns for beach concert

Planet D Nonet will return to the Manistee ShoreLine ShowCase stage at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The group is known as a “down and dirty little swing band,” performing swing, blues, space-age jazz and classic American songs. The “D” in the name stands for Detroit, and “Nonet” is a group of nine.

The free weekly Tuesday evening concerts are held held at the Rotary Gazebo located at the First Street Beach. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved the First Street Beach shelter.

Planet D Nonet garnered an award for Best Jazz CD in 2011 and Best Traditional Jazz Band at the 2013 Detroit Music Awards. Fans of Ellington & Strayhorn, Fletcher Henderson, Count Basie & Benny Carter as well as modern jazz by Sun Ra and Pharoah Saunders won’t want miss this concert, organizers said.
