Onekama falls to Norsemen

SUTTONS BAY — Onekama was dealt a 34-14 road loss at Suttons Bay on the opening game of the season Thursday night.

“We shot ourselves in the foot a bunch of times tonight,” Onekama coach Jim Hunter said. “We gave up some big plays in the passing game. We had them numerous times at third and long and they’d complete a long pass. We gave up a couple of long touchdown passes.”

The Norsemen (1-0) took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Portagers (0-1) answered back when running back Jon Acton crossed the goal line on an 11-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Jarett Sovereign completed a pass to Randy Pienta for the two-point conversion, giving Onekama a 1-point lead.

Another Suttons Bay touchdown pushed the score to 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.

“There were just too many mental mistakes,” Hunter said. “We had them numerous times at third-and-long and they’d complete a long pass.”

Onekama held the Norsemen to just one touchdown in the second quarter, but were unable to find the end zone themselves. Suttons Bay held a 20-8 lead going into halftime.

The Norsemen found the end zone again in the third quarter, taking a 28-8 lead.

“They have a nice quarterback and a couple of nice receivers and they gave us fits,” Hunter said.

Both Onekama and Suttons Bay scored in the fourth quarter, with the Portagers’ Sovereign finding the end zone on a 4-yard run.

“I thought the kids played hard,” Hunter said. “I like the fact that we came back and got another score in the fourth quarter because Suttons Bay had pulled away by that time.

“There’s some things to build on,” he continued. “At different times there were some very positive things both offensively and defensively and those are the coaching points we’ll have to build off of.”
