DEBORAH JACOBS: Newspaper coverage of Dillon’s mistake is overkill

TO THE EDITOR:

Finally, someone who put his observations on paper! Way to go Nick Swan (letter, “Media should leave Dillon alone to heal” published in the Aug. 27 edition of the News Advocate).

I too have been reading and grimacing every time the Advocate chose to rag on Dr. Dillon.

I too have to wonder, who has an ax to grind that this mere mortal has had to withstand this kind of attention. He unfortunately made an error in judgment, but to be crucified in the public eye as he has been — please. I would say there has been a lot of overkill.

EDITOR’S NOTE: No one at the News Advocate has an “ax to grind” with Charles Dillon, nor has the newspaper printed any “rumors” about the case as Mr. Swan’s letter stated. Dillon’s case is different in that he is a public official who’s salary is paid by taxpayers in the college district, and he was driving a college vehicle. We are simply printing the information as it becomes available to us from the police, courts and college board. The News Advocate is not covering the story any differently than other media in the area.
