REMOVING BLIGHT: Demolition of two Manistee buildings starts

MANISTEE — Demolition started at the former Manistee Plating facility and a neighboring building this week.

Both building will be torn this month to clear room for possible redevelopment and eliminate blight in the City of Manistee.

Swidorski Bros. Excavating is doing the demolition and cleanup work at the old facility at a cost of under $70,000.

The buildings, at 259 Sixth Ave. and 261 Sixth Ave., were opened in 1958 and 1965 and have been vacant since the mid-1990s. The facilities are contaminated and must be demolished.

The demolition is anticipated to bring nearby vacancy rates from 7 percent to 3 percent.
