JUDY CARL: City manager’s column ‘omits critical data and facts’

TO THE EDITOR:

Who at the Manistee News Advocate is checking the accuracy of what the city manager writes as a guest columnist?

When anyone submits a letter to the editor that contains statements or figures regarding the City of Manistee, the writer of the letter must provide documenting support for the data before the letter is published by the Manistee News Advocate. However, it appears that city manager Mitch Deisch is allowed to publish columns where he omits critical data and facts on decisions affecting city residents, businesses and taxpayers, especially if the decisions reflect poorly on him and the city council.

Perhaps the city manager’s guest columns are published on the paper’s “opinion” page because they are Mr. Deisch’s opinion and not the complete fact?

The intentional omission of data is a form of distortion and dishonesty. It appears that every Manistee city resident, business owner and taxpayer needs to question everything Mr. Deisch says or writes by asking themselves, “What has the city manager not disclosed?” and “What has the city manager distorted?”

The city council has allowed a sad situation to be created in Manistee. After reading the Aug. 22 guest column, it is no wonder why the city manager, finance director and city council are under public scrutiny.

Shame on the Manistee News Advocate for accepting Mr. Deisch’s guest column; if he submits another, MNA staff should make a point of visiting www.facebook.com/real.manistee to verify that what Mr. Deisch presents is the truth and the whole truth. Otherwise, MNA is doing a major disservice to its readers.

Maybe Mr. Deisch can fool the city council through his omission of fact and distortion, but he is having a harder time deceiving and fooling me, as well as many other residents of Manistee and Manistee County.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The News Advocate reserves the right to edit letters to the editor for clarity and considers it our duty to check facts presented in letters as best we can before publishing. Letters to the editor offer our readers space in the newspaper to express their opinions and feelings. Guest columns (written by anyone other than News Advocate or Pioneer Group staff) offer another form of opinion, and these are usually written by syndicated columnists or locally by city or county officials or leaders of various organizations. The city manager, much like other public officials in the county, writes a column several times a year on a subject of his choosing. Omissions can not be fact checked. As a public official, he is expected to have a certain level of credibility.

Facebook has come a long way since it was a college student site. Few businesses and cities do not have a FB page and are not jokes. Maybe we cannot take the city’s FB page seriously either. Real Manistee Facebook has provided accurate information that would NEVER appear in print in the MNA.
