PREP SOCCER: Chips’ streak snapped vs. Huskies

BENZONIA — The Manistee soccer team’s five-game winning streak was snapped Thursday in a 4-0 road loss to Benzie Central.

The Huskies scored a pair of goals in each half while the Chippewas were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities.

“We missed a lot of chances up front tonight that could have kept us in the game, and probably changed momentum a little bit,” said Manistee coach Brandon Prince, whose team had not played since a win over Pentwater on Sept. 30. “We knew coming into it that we’d have to get back up to game speed quickly, and it really took us the whole first half to do it.

“The second half was a lot better, but Benzie scored some good goals,” he said. “They earned all of them.”

The Chippewas round out the regular season tonight against Kingsley at home, while a Division 3 district quarterfinal against Mason County Central is on tap for Monday.

“Districts are coming up, so I told the guys now is the time to get the mistakes out of the way,” Prince said. “Come district time, there’s no tomorrow.

“These guys started out with a bit of a down year, but came back and have just played great the last eight games, and our record has shown that,” he added. “When you have a streak going, it’s kind of that elephant in the room that no one talks about. But now it’s over, so the stress of it is gone.

“We just move forward with the soccer we know we can play.”

PREP SWIMMING

Chips edged by Lakers

SPRING LAKE — The Manistee swim team suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Spring Lake on Thursday, falling 96-87 in their Coastal Swim Conference dual.

The Chippewas won just three events, but with seven second-place finishes were still within striking distance in the final heat of the night.

“We still had some great swims,” said Manistee coach Corey Van Fleet, looking over the nip-and-tuck score sheet. “I mean, look at those times. If you drop your handkerchief you’re going to lose.”

Anna Kutschke led Manistee with a pair of victories, winning the 100-yard freestyle (56.07) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:16.30), while Jessica Gustad took first in the 50-yard freestyle (26.74).
