JOHN. S. TAYLOR: Coastguardsman honored to call judge candidate a friend

TO THE EDITOR:

I am a retired chief machinery technician of the United States Coast Guard.

During my USCG career, I was lucky enough to be stationed at USCG Station Manistee. This is where I met David Thompson.

Our initial relationship was that of a subordinate. Being a 1st class machinery technician, I was in charge of all the station’s mechanical assets from lawn mowers to our search and rescue boats.

David was part of my machinery technician crew. I soon found out he had a superior work ethic, endless stamina and was an all-around exceptional coast guardsman. I grew to greatly trust in David’s ability in all aspects of being a member of Coast Guard Station Manistee.

In my four years stationed at Manistee, Dave and I developed more than a professional relationship. I am proud and honored to say we became close friends. That was 25 years ago.

I was transferred away to finish my USCG career, but David and I never lost touch. I retired from the USCG in 1998 and moved back to Manistee permanently. David has been, and remains to be, one of my closest trusted friends. I know I can count on him as good friends do. I am truly honored to be considered a friend of the Thompson family and very proud of what he has accomplished and the man he has become.

He will always have my unwavering support and friendship. For these reasons, I proudly and most assuredly announce my endorsement for fellow veteran of our armed services, David Thompson as 19th Circuit Court judge.
