Launch Manistee and area schools help seniors complete college applications

MANISTEE —Launch Manistee has organized and led the effort to get 100 percent school participation for College Application Week in Manistee County.

Bear Lake, Brethren, CASMAN Academy, Manistee Catholic Central, Manistee and Onekama high schools, will be participating in Michigan’s fourth annual College Application Week November 3 to 7, with nearly 300 other Michigan high schools.

The goal of the College Application Week program is to give every graduating senior the opportunity to apply to college and promote the need for education beyond high school. During this event, students may apply to any of Michigan’s community colleges, independent colleges and universities, and state universities in which they are interested. They may also investigate and apply for trade and vocational schools.

Mary Ann Behm, Program Coordinator for Launch Manistee, expects more than 200 seniors to participate with the help of area counselors and volunteers. In addition, Michigan Works! will also be sponsoring an event to assist GED and Adult Education completers during College Application Week.

“I am excited about the level of participation from our schools and the community for the planning and implementation of College Application Week “ said Mary Ann Behm, program coordinator for Launch Manistee. “This is a great opportunity for our graduating high school seniors and our adult completers to get assistance to navigate the complex college admissions process. In addition, many colleges and universities in Michigan waive their application fee during College Application Week, including Baker College, West Shore Community College, and Northwestern Michigan Community College.”

College Application Week began in North Carolina as a pilot effort of a single high school in 2005. This year, American College Application Campaign programs will take place in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The national campaign expands each year to include more high schools committed to a common goal of increasing the percentage of first-generation and low-income students to pursue a post secondary education.

Last year, 208 high schools participated in Michigan, helping 16,279 seniors complete more than 20,975 applications. This year, over 300 high schools are expected to participate. Michigan College Application Week is sponsored by the Michigan College Access Network.
