City police respond to assault-in-progress early Wednesday

Early on Wednesday, Dec. 24, City of Manistee police officers were dispatched to Manistee Place Apartments in Manistee on a report of an assault in progress, according to a news release from the City of Manistee Police Department.

Officers arrived and learned there were three victims and two suspects.

The suspects — described as being Hispanic males — fled prior to officers arriving at the scene.

One of the suspects, last seen wearing a purple and black hoodie sweatshirt. was reported to have short black hair, with tattoos on his face in the form of writing as well as tattoos on his neck, arms, and hands.

The second suspect was reported to have long wavy black hair and wearing a red shirt.

One of the victims was arrested for an unrelated two county felony warrant and transported to West Shore Medical Center for treatment of his injuries & clearance to the jail. He sustained bruises and a fractured rib.

The other two victims were innocent neighbors — a husband and wife — who tried to stop the assault and were then assaulted themselves. The female victim sustained a severe laceration to her head after being struck in the head with an intentionally-thrown rock as she was pulling her husband to safety. She was transported to West Shore Medical Center and treated for her injuries by Medic 5 Ambulance. She had received 27 stitches to her head. Both husband and wife also sustained bruises and were released after receiving medical treatment.

This incident is still under current investigation and more information will be released as the investigation continues to develop.
