Chips fall to Panthers in overtime

HOLLAND — The Manistee co-op hockey team was 30 seconds away from winning its second straight game Monday night, but couldn’t hold on in an eventual 4-3 overtime loss to Holland West Ottawa.

The undefeated Panthers knotted the score at 3-3 with 29 seconds to go in regulation before netting the game winner at 3:32 in overtime to best the Chippewas, who were coming off a 7-1 victory over the Mid-Michigan Storm on Saturday.

“It was back and forth until the end,” said Manistee coach Mike Healy. “We had a lot of chances (on a five-minute power play in the third), but we just couldn’t burry one. I was still really proud of the effort we gave tonight, but sometimes it just doesn’t go your way.”

Manistee’s Will Shriver had three points with a pair of goals and an assist to lead the way while teammate Austin McCarthy was credited with two feeds in the losing effort.

The Chippewas lit the lamp first as Shriver scored unassisted with 7:41 remaining in the first. West Ottawa, however, was quick to respond with a power play goal at 6:07 to tie the game, and another score with eight seconds left put the Panthers up 2-1 by the first intermission.

Manistee’s Jacob Stefanski scored the lone goal in the second period, taking feeds from McCarthy and Shriver, and tying the game at 2-2 on the power play with 12:15 remaining in the frame.

Shriver gave his team a 3-2 lead early in the third, scoring his second goal of the night off assists from McCarthy and Chippewa captain Jacob Harrie, but Manistee was just short of securing the lead long enough for victory.

The Chippewas will look to bounce back from the heartbreaker this weekend, when they travel to Cadillac on Friday and open Northern Michigan Hockey League play on the road against Petoskey on Saturday.

“We’re not down on any of the guys,” Healy said. “We’re excited with the way they played against an undefeated team. To have them down that late in the game should keep our confidence up.

“We’ll have a good couple days of practice — work on our couple mistakes — and get ready to go for the weekend.”
