Big M prepares for season

Cross country skiers finally have some snow to play in and starting this weekend, they’ll have groomed trails to play on at the Big M Cross Country Ski Area. The Manistee Cross Country Ski Council, the volunteer group that runs the Big M, hopes to have trails groomed by noon Saturday. But the real fun at Big M begins the following weekend. The ski council will kick off the season on Saturday, Jan. 14 with two fundraisers: The Big M Challenge and the Big M-m-m-m.

Winners in the Wellston Improvement Association annual Christmas Home and Business Lighting and decorating contest were: 1st Don Arnold, 2nd Larry Allen Jr., 3rd Eugene Przybylski.

“Excursions” to mark start of train service

Train “excursions” of earlier days will be recalled here the last of the month. A group o Manisteeans will observe the resumption of passenger train service to Manistee on Jan. 31 by riding from Grand Rapids on the first train which will come here on a new schedule recently announced by the C & O Railway.

Roads will now be sanded

Trunklines in Manistee County were dry and ice-free and most slippery spots on the secondary country roads were well sanded today. School buses resumed their routes after it was advise by the county road commission yesterday not to send the buses out because of the slippery road conditions.
