Tax preparation services available at FiveCAP

MANISTEE — FiveCAP, Inc. is once again providing free tax preparation to residents of its four-county service area.

“This is a service we provide year-round, but it’s in much higher demand this time of year, when everyone is receiving their tax documents,” FiveCAP Community Support director Amy Jalocha. “Appointments fill quickly, so we recommend calling as soon as you have your documents together.”

Jalocha said many residents don’t realize they are eligible for a variety of tax credits, so it’s important to file a tax return, even if it’s not required.

“There is money out there waiting to be claimed that can help people get by,” she said. “In addition to federal and state income tax returns, low-income families often qualify for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit and, though it’s been cut in recent years, there is a State Earned Income Tax Credit as well. Other credits are out there for families with children and things such as the amount you’ve spent on home heat and property taxes.”

The following documents must be prepared to provide the following documents at the time of their appointment:

● Any W-2 and/or 1099 forms;

● Year-end statements for those who receive social security benefits;

● Year-end and quarterly statements for those who receive SSI benefits;

● Family Independence statements from the Department of Human Services;

● Child support statements;

● Unemployment benefit statements;

● Any other statements for income received in 2014;

● Heating costs from Nov. 1, 2013 to Oct. 31, 2014;

● Property tax statements (both summer and winter) with State Equalized Value; and

● Birthdays and social security numbers for themselves and any dependents.

To make an appointment for FiveCAP’s free tax preparation services, call (231) 723-8327, or stop by the Manistee County FiveCAP office, located at 265 First St., in Manistee.
