“Frita” screening at Frankfort’s Garden Theatre May 20

A screening of the 2002 film “Frita,” starring Salma Hayek, will be shown at 7 p.m. on May 20 at the Garden Theatre in Frankfort.

A reception at 6 p.m. precedes the rated R film, which will be shown at 7 p.m. Art by local women artists will be on display during the reception.

“Kahlo, one of Mexico’s most prominent, iconoclastic painters reaches the screen under the guiding hand of producer/star Salma Hayek,” a release said. “Hayek ages some 30 years on screen as she charts Frida Kahlo’s life from feisty schoolgirl to a world-renowned artist.”

The release said the film chronicles Kahlo’s affluent upbringing in Mexico City, and her nurturing relationship with her traditional mother (Patricia Reyes Spindola) and philosophical father (Roger Rees), as well has her stormy relationship with muralist Diego Rivera.

The event was organized by the Benzie Democrats’ fundraising committee.

There is no cost for admission however, donations will be requested at the door.
