Under construction

The stub pier in Manistee Harbor will be closed to fishing and pedestrian traffic until the beginning of August. Workers from Roen Salvage Co., out of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., are installing 500 steel sheet pilings on each side of the pier. They will fill the pier with stone and cap it with cement. The pedestrian walkway will be restored.

Bear Lake Honor Students

Valedictorian of the Bear Lake High School Class of 1975 is Patrick (Rick) Hejl. Rick is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hejl of South Shore Drive, Bear Lake. This year’s Salutatorian is Lisa Stolcenberg who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Stolcenberg of Bear Lake.

Local men in Washington D.C.

Three members of Manistee County’s jet base committee (Bob Rengo, Max Adams, and Fred Clohset) flew to Washington yesterday afternoon for further work on Manistee’s efforts to have the new $13,000,000 Northern Michigan jet base located in this county. Their visit is a follow-up of a previous visit which resulted in the house defense appropriations subcommittee ordering the Air Force to make a survey of the Kaleva-Copemish site.

80 YEARS AGO

New barracks for State Police

Immediate construction of 18 miles of concrete highway along the lakeshore from Ludington State Park to Manistee and the construction of a state police barracks here are the recommendations of the State Planning Commission. The building of a barracks here for the state police is the only new building project listed in this territory.

Work on welfare projects to stop

Because of limited funds all welfare projects throughout the city and rural sections in Manistee County will stop tonight, the men resuming their work June 3, it was announced today.
