JIM TINSLEY: Some present unfair horror stories about ACA

TO THE EDITOR:

In the guest editorial published in the June 10 edition of the News Advocate,”Health care costs on the rise,” the author cherry picks negative data to smear the Affordable Care Act.

The truth is that “nationwide, marketplace premiums did not increase at all from 2014 to 2015, though there were substantial average premium increases in some states and declines in others.” This data was compiled by the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Citizens and groups that unfairly tell horror stories about the Affordable Care Act often pretend that this act replaced a healthcare system that worked. It didn’t.

It should be noted during the seven-year period between 2003 and 2010, pre-Affordable Care Act, the cost of family healthcare increased 63 percent nationwide. This is according to the Commonwealth Fund, an independent foundation that supports research on healthcare issues.
