Taxes increase in Manistee Township

The Manistee Township Board of Trustees okayed a property tax increase of 1.0221 mills at its monthly meeting Tuesday. The millage increase follows a truth-in-taxation hearing held on Monday night. It will increase township operating revenues from property taxes by 72 percent over what they would have been without a truth-in-taxation hearing.

Training for circus

Tumbling crews, acrobats, and other entertainers are training regularly at the Manistee High School gym for the annual Sands Circus which will be held at MHS’s Chippewa Field on July 27.

Cookout at Country Club

The tennis courts adjoining the clubhouse at the Manistee Golf and Country Club will take on the appearance of an outdoor kitchen next Sunday for the annual family cook-out at which barbecued turkey will be the menu feature. Club members are asked to RSVP.

80 YEARS AGO

Local brine used on roads

Salt brine from two Manistee plants is being used on the gravel roads of three counties to settle the dust. Previously the state had used a solid compound in its dust laying work but started an experiment with the liquid brine and found that it is effective and less expensive than previous methods.

Crowd at concert

A large crowd attended the first concert of the season given last night by the Iron Works Band on the courthouse lawn.
