SHERRI WEHRMEISTER: Manistee County offers many options for outdoor exercise

TO THE EDITOR:

I attended the Manistee County Health and Wellness Summit on Aug. 13 and thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Dean Sienko and his message.

I especially liked his acronym EDD — exercise deficient disorder — that has contributed to the rise in obesity and increased risk for health problems in our community. The basic message was that we are eating more than we’re moving.

If you think about it, Manistee County has some of the best outdoor recreational spots in the State of Michigan that people travel to from all over the country to enjoy!

Many of you enjoy walking our riverwalk. Did you know that if you walk the whole thing end to end and back that you’ve basically walked a 5K?

How about the bike path from First Street Beach to Fox Farm Road? That’s a nice five mile bike ride. You could take a couple hour canoe trip from the Little Manistee River Weir to the Stronach tubes with your friends and family.

There are volleyball nets at both the public beaches or you could even just a stroll around your neighborhood.

We have a wonderful community with so much to offer, why not try to spend at least 30 minutes a day outside enjoying it?
