Mary K. S. (Schwing) Stone recently celebrated her 90th birthday at the Lake Bluffs Audubon Center and Bird Sanctuary on Lakeshore Road in Manistee.

Her eight children and their families, including 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, hosted a cocktail hour and alfresco dinner overlooking Lake Michigan at the sunset hour on August 8. Numerous stepchildren and their families happily acquired in her marriages to the late William Howard Hanson and the late Dr. Ford E. Stone, as well as the Schwings’ first of many foreign exchange student “daughters”, Gisela Schotten Draeger, who traveled from Aachen, Germany for the event, along with many dear friends, comprised a group of approximately 90 people gathered to honor the occasion.

Born Aug. 7th, 1925 in Syracuse, N.Y. to Frank and Esther (Sax) Schmitt, Mrs. Stone protests that her arrival was no miracle in the eyes of her parents.

Her friends and family beg to differ.

She has always and continues to elevate and inspire the lives of all through her energetic involvement with sports and with the community, such as the Women’s Tennis League and downhill skiing well into her 80’s, and including work for the Manistee Public Library, The League of Women Voters, the Adult Literacy Program, The American Association of University Women and Guardian Angels’ Church of Manistee.

She has more recently worked at St. Joseph’s Parish of Onekama, where she presently resides on the shores of Portage Lake, offering a dual attraction to her many connections.

Happy birthday, Mary! Our world is a better place since you have graced it with your presence.
