All about having fun

Annual swim show gives students chance to try different events

MANISTEE — More than 60 local children started of their holiday break with the Bob Olsen Swim Show on Saturday.

About 25 Manistee High School boys, 10 girls and 30 boys and girls from Manistee Middle School participated in the event, along with about six high school alumni.

“The kids had a lot of fun,” said Corey Van Fleet, who helped organize the annual event. “It went pretty well.”

He said that those swimming were able to choose which events they wanted to participate in.

“Normally they have to swim prescribed events so we can try to win the meets,” Van Fleet explained. “Today they got to swim different strokes and distances then they usually do.”

Individual times were kept, but mostly the day was about having fun.

The event also is a way to raise money for the swim program.

From donations received, $750 will go to the Corey Van Fleet Perpetual Swimming Fund at the Manistee County Community Foundation, said Van Fleet.

An event called “Chuck a duck” where people purchased numbered ducks then attempted to toss them into the center of a pool toy raised money for the swimming fund.

“We don’t want anyone to avoid the swimming program because they cant afford it,” he said. The fund purchases things like swimming suits for those who can’t afford their own.

The event is named in honor of Bob Olsen, former superintendent at Manistee Area Public Schools.

“He had a background in aquatics,” said Van Fleet. “When became possible to have a swimming pool Bob championed for a pool. He was instrumental in putting together the consortium with the hospital and the school.”

Van Fleet believes Olsen would of the swimming program at MAPS.

“He was probably the district’s most vocal cheerleader, as well as being superintendent,” he said.
