Early ice fishing

Many Manistee County anglers are taking advantage of the early ice on area lakes as many fishermen are ice fishing on Eastlake, Bear Lake, Manistee, Portage, Arcadia, Dickson, and various other inland lakes and ponds.

60 YEARS AGO

Ski area open

Although mild weather eliminated skiing at the Manistee Winter Ski Area in the Udell Hills on Saturday, fine skiing was enjoyed yesterday by a fair group of skiers yesterday. No skiing was allowed on the slopes Saturday because of the mild weather and the possibility of cutting and damaging the slopes and base.

Deadline for dance

Reservations for the Lakeside Club dinner dance at the Hotel Chippewa Thursday will close tomorrow noon. Advance preparations for the dance indicate that it will be a very successful year event this year. The theme of this year’s dance is the “Snow Ball” and decorations are being planned by Mrs. Drew Bradford and Mrs. Dorr Johnson.

80 YEARS AGO

Army will hold party

Marking the final phase of the holiday activities of The Salvation Army, a Christmas party and entertainment for children will be held under the auspices of the organization at the local auditorium. Through the generosity of Manisteeans who contributed through the Army kettles on the streets, the Salvation Army was enabled to provide Christmas dinners for a total of 78 persons.

Young Democrats

Local Democrats will join with other party members throughout the nation in celebrating Andrew Jackson Day as plans are announced by the Manistee County Young Democrats for a dinner to be held at the Hotel Chippewa on Jan. 8.
