Tours of the James Dempsey Manor will be held today due to their success during the Victorian Sleighbell Parade and Old Christmas Weekend earlier this month.

The tours will start at noon, 1:15 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. Each tour will last about an hour.

The mansion is largest still-standing lumber baron mansion in town, according to co-owner James Colburn.

Dressed as Mr. Dempsey and his wife, Mary, he and co-owner Jan Peterson spared no expense to acquire the most authentic Victorian attire appropriate to their counterparts’ status in the 19th.

The home has 10 fireplaces, a sky-lit three-story open atrium enclosed by oak handrails supported by the original 274 hand-turned oak spindles, five landings to reach the thhird floor, 61 windows, 48 working doors, 29 patterns of wallpaper (amounting to over 500 rolls), an Irish Waterford chandelier with 550 crystal drops and fixtures requiring 335 light bulbs to light the house.

Anyone attending a tour should be 16 years old or older and are encouraged to arrive 10 minutes early for orientation and to slip on the disposable shoe-covers used during their stay.

There is a cost for tours. Advanced reservations come at a lower cost, call (616) 802-4588.

Parking is available alongside the mansion on Fifth Street.

The proceeds of the tour will go toward the preservation fund for continuing the restoration of the exterior of the mansion.
