Manistee finishes the season

IMG_3925 copyYPSILANTI — The Manistee swim team didn’t have a great day at the state finals with no one placing in the final rounds.

Despite not placing in any races, head coach Corey Van Fleet is pleased with how his team improved.

“We had a few career fastest swims,” Van Fleet said. “Dominik (Pleifer) dropped another second in the freestyle. Noah Antal dropped another second in the 400 freestyle. We improved in our freestyle relays. In the short relay we improved by three seconds.”

200-yard medley relay team of Emil Rahbek, Jared Wrzesinski, Zac Carter and Pleifer finished at 1:49.39,  or 28th out of 31.

In the diving event Campbell Kolk finished with a 152.50 or 19th out of 34 in prelims. He advanced to the semis where he had a 210.20 for 20 out of 20. Kolk will be back next year and he will automatically qualify for the state tournament.

”He gets another automatic qualifying next year, because he was in the finals,” Van Fleet said.

In the 200-yard IM Zac Carter swam a 2:14.60 and finished 44th, while Logan Schmutzler swam a 2:14.64 to finish 45th.

The 200-yard free relay with Schmutzler, Pleifer, Carter, Antal finished at 1:33.14, or 23rd out of 29.

The 400-yard free relay with Schmutzler, Pleifer, Carter, Antal finished at 3:28.74, or 23rd out of 31.

“We just got to see the best of the best. It’s always invigorating when you see the levels that these kids are swimming at. Pretty soon they get out of the pool and stand next to you and you’re the same size. It makes an impression, so they’ll come back and work a little harder,” Van Fleet said. “We’ll regroup come next week and start working for next year.”
