MANISTEE — For the first time in three years, Manistee Catholic Central will have a new girls basketball coach.

And for the first time in 15 years, the Sabers will not see Terry Walker prowling the sidelines in one coaching capacity or another.

Walker tendered his resignation as MCC’s girls basketball coach over spring break, but said that he knew during the season that this would be his last.

Walker took over the girls varsity team in 2013, immediately after a 12-year stint as coach of the Saber JV boys team, when then-coach Todd Erickson stepped down to take over the girls basketball program at Manistee High School.

When nobody applied for the vacancy, Walker stepped in and filled the void, in part because he had family on the team. Walker’s niece Jodi Janowiak and cousin by marriage Meghan Miller were sophomores then.

“It came down to about two weeks before the season,” Walker said. “I said that I would take it and do it as long as those girls are here, but that will be it.”

Walker, the Filer Township supervisor, said that he simply did not have the ability to put in the time required of a full-time head of a varsity program.

“I’ve got a full plate, without the basketball,” he said. “It’s just not fair to the kids.”

MCC athletic director Hilary McKie said that the position has been posted, and that there have already been several applicants.

“He will be missed,” McKie said. “He was a big part of the JV boys program before he coached the girls. He’s a great coach and a good person, too.”

Under Walker, the Sabers went a combined 46-22 and won three district championships.

“It was very rewarding,” Walker said. “I’d never coached girls before, at all. It was totally different, but I really enjoyed it. These past three years have been extremely enjoyable.”

Before his career at MCC, Walker served in several different coaching capacities at various times in various sports at Manistee High School, beginning in 1970.
