Cub Scouts have fun with mobile races

MANISTEE — “On your mark, get set, go!”

That’s a phrase that was repeated throughout the afternoon Sunday as about 20 members of Manistee’s Cub Scout Pack No. 269 participated in Cub Mobile Races.

Pack members range from first to fifth grade, and this weekend they had the chance to race each other down the hill on Washington Street near the water tower.

“It’s similar to the soap box derby, but it’s more stripped down,” said Duke Edmondson, scout master. “They just make an ‘I’ frame out of two by fours and put brakes and a rope on it and away we go.”

Many of the cars were used last year, which was the first time the pack held such an event, however some did need maintenance.

“We’ve got some new cars, and we got a lot of new racers this year, which is great,” said Edmondson. “It’s a lot of fun. It’s entertaining to watch.”

Even though the participants go down the hill in pairs, the event isn’t really a race.

“It’s just a ‘for fun’ thing,” Edmondson said. “This is the second-best thing to the Pinewood Derby. I think the boys enjoy it.”
